Shards of Color
This mixed media installation by James Turrell is visible from multiple points on the upper and lower levels of the property. James Turrell is an internationally acclaimed light and space artist whose works play with perception and the effect of light within a created space. With the commission for The Shops at Crystals, Turrell responded to the unique architecture of the space to create artworks that can be experienced from multiple vantage points; whether seen from afar as subtly changing planes of color or from immersed within an area flooded with light. He believes human perception to be his true medium; in his words, "My art is about your seeing".
ARIA’s Fine Art Collection
The first major permanent collection of art in Las Vegas to be integrated into a public space is one of the world’s largest and most ambitious corporate art collections in existence today. The ARIA Fine Art Collection features works by acclaimed artists, sculptors and visionaries including Maya Lin, Jenny Holzer, Nancy Rubins, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Frank Stella, Henry Moore and Richard Long, among others. Validating the ARIA Campus’ status as a cultural destination of world-wide significance, the ARIA Fine Art Collection is designed to become a benchmark for enlightened corporate involvement with the arts on a global level. As if in a strolling gallery, guests happen upon works by world-renowned artists as they stroll through the ARIA Campus’ walkways, hotels and residences. From vibrant and ornate to intimate and serene, these works are strategically placed to reveal a world of fascinating experiences that unfold around every corner. The artwork has been paired with the ARIA Campus’ unique architecture to create a sensory journey that presents the works in a never-before-seen fashion. The ARIA Fine Art Collection encompasses a multitude of styles and media –ranging from sculptures and paintings to other works of art including large-scale installations – engaging visitors on both a visual and intellectual level. Some are existing pieces, carefully chosen for their artistic value and cultural significance; others are site-specific installations for which the artist was invited to command their vision over the space.
In addition to various art installations, shoppers also have the exclusive opportunity to enjoy multiple water features and attractions found within The Shops at Crystals.
The Grand Staircase
The focal point of The Shops at Crystals' signature space is the Grand Staircase, inspired by Rome’s Spanish Steps. Ascending 24 feet from level 1 through Starbucks, popular photo destination consists of three separate staircases, all dressed with eco-friendly bamboo and red Sapele wood adorned with pink agate collected from all around the World that is backlit for maximum visual effect.
At the awe-inspiring heart of The Shops at Crystals this one-of-a-kind feature stands three stories in height and is visible from almost every location within the center. The upper level of the Treehouse provides an elegant portal of wood-lined lowered ceilings and meandering walls offering a unique space for Mastro’s Ocean Club’s main dining room.
This first-of-its-kind installation consists of large pillars of carved ice that rise as tall as 15 feet in Crystals’ unique public space. These columns emerge silently from a pristine pool, ascending rapidly upward as immense monoliths of frozen water. As each ice monument rises, it is carved at water level into intricate, three-dimensional patterns. Colored lighting combines with the varied ice clarities to produce a visual experience that never repeats itself.
Another of The Shops at Crystals' wonderful water features, Halo offers a visual display of multiple water vortexes’ within clear cylinders protruding through the floor. Set at different heights, the swirling whirlpools are accented by an array of colorful lights and welcome guests to walk through and touch this maze while staying completely dry.
