Basic Program Information
The Florida Mall Education Center is a Dropout Prevention/Retrieval program for high school students. The program is designed to provide students the opportunity to complete their high school requirements through academics and employability skills. Students attend academic classes half-day and work in the area of hospitality and retail sales the other half-day. By using a hands-on approach to academics, The Florida Mall Education Center operates under the philosophy that we all have unique talents and abilities. Florida Mall Education Center emphasizes and develops student's abilities in a non-traditional approach. This approach allows the student to achieve success in required subjects through a focus on academics and job training. Our objective is to target at-risk students that have not been successful in the traditional high school setting.
School Academic Component:
A small teacher ratio of one to fifteen students allows for personal, individualized instruction in regular high school courses. A total of 24 credits and a passing score on the FCAT Math and Communications test are required for graduation. Students receive diplomas from their home schools. Required credits for graduation are: 4 English, 3 Mathematics, 3 Science, 3 Social Studies, 1.5 Physical Education, and 8.5 - 9 Electives.
Work Component: Ages 16 and above
Students are hired by mall businesses and surrounding businesses near the mall as part-time employees and work 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday with longer hours during weekends, holidays and when school is not in session. School bus transportation is provided to the work site.
School and Work Site Coordination:
A lead teacher serves as job coordinator liaison to help ensure student success at the work site. Successful partnerships are nurtured through shared vision and mission, positive communication and effective management.
Additional Programs Offered
Other services and programs by various community agencies will be offered during evening and weekend hours. Currently, the ERC is hosting night school classes for alternative education students who are behind in their credits.
