For over 200 years, the “Liege Waffle” [pronounced Lee-ay’-j] has been a staple on the streets of Belgium where artisanal street vendors sell them as a traditional snack food for commuters on their way to work. Because the sugar that is used in the dough carmelizes in the waffle iron, this unique waffle does not need syrup. So, people can eat them while they walk on their way. Hence, the name; Walking Waffle.
